View of Muroran (from Mt. Sokuryo) | Night View of Mt. Sokuryo |
One of the most spectacular spots you must see is the night view of the Muroran Harbor from Mt. Sokuryo Observatory Deck which is on the summit of Mt. Sokuryo (199.6 m). You can see great panoramic views of Muroran and have a closer look of the 6 TV (antenna) Towers which are illuminated colorfully at night by donations from citizens. Mt. Sokuryo, sokuryo meaning "to survey", was named for a survey point for the main road construction during the 19th century.
The Daikoku Island, which is 2.4 ha and 35 m tall, lies 1 mile west of the Etomo Peninsula, the entrance of the Muroran Harbor. In 1838, the island was named for Daikokuten, one of the Seven Deities of Good Fortune (Shichifukujin). There is a grave for the British Ship "Providence" crew who was died in 1796. Once known for its natural black lilies, over picking decreased their population, so now people have been planting new black lilies there for many years. |
"Etomo" is derived from the Ainu word "Enrumu" that means "a cape." It is located on the edge of the Etomo Peninsula. From the viewpoint of the peninsula, you can see volcanoes such as Mt. Usu, Mt. Showa, and Mt. Yohtei, and the Oshima Peninsula and the Cape Esan. |
Kin-byobu (Golden Cliff) is a huge reddish brown cliff, which is located near Cape Earth (Chikyu Misaki) and appears gold when the morning sun shines, like a golden paper screen. Byobu means Japanese Paper Screen |
|
Gin-Byobu (Silver Cliff) is also a huge cliff, which is located at the south end of the Etomo Peninsula and appears silver before dawn. |
Masuichi is derived from the Ainu word "Masui chise" that means "the nest of black-tailed gulls." The beach is located between Mt. Sokuryo and Ginbyobu. The area is a wildlife sanctuary where you can see falcons, bush warblers, cuckoo and more! Many rocks on the seashore remind us of candles, seagulls, lying elephants and so on. You can also see a Mt. Komagatake across the Volcano Bay. |
Cape Earth is one of the eminent scenic spots of all Japan. When it is clear, you can view Mt. Komagatake, Cape Esan, and the Shimokita Peninsula from the observation deck. Many people visit there to see the first sunrise of the New Year. |
Tokkarisho is derived from the Ainu word "tokaru isho" that means "a stone of seal." Many rugged cliffs covered with grass and the serene sea at the Itanki Beach make an exquisite combination. This unique view has been seen on many TV dramas and movies. |
The Volcano Bay is well known as a dolphin and whale watching point. From one of the sightseeing boats, you can see them closely. The boats are available from the end of April to the middle of August. |
