Muroran harbor
Port of Muroran, located in the eastern part of Volcano Bay and surrounded
by the Etomo Peninsula, is an excellent natural harbor. The 16.5 m-deep harbor
accommodated boats of even 90,000 tons and serves as a gateway to the sea
for 200 years. Today, it serves as the core of commerce and distribution of
goods in Hokkaido. The harbor, linked by ferry to three commercial harbors
in the main island of Japan, is experiencing increases in cargo and passengers.
The present city planning projects fully in corporate the port and the sea.
In particular, the "Shukuzu-Etomo Area Land Use Project" which was
intended to reach completion at the same time as the Hakucho Bridge provides
opportunity and a place for every citizen to enjoy the sea.
