Overall
Muroran has contributed greatly to the development of Hokkaido through its
iron and steel, oil refining, machinery and cement industries. Today, the
city''s industries reach into fields such as the development of clean energy
including wind power generations, marketing of local electricity, addressing
environment-friendly recycling industries and the development of welfare and
nursing devises.
Support for small and medium-sized local companies in the Muroran area, which
is collaboratively provided by the industrial, academic and government sectors,
mainly through the "Muroran Techno Center", as well as the "CRD
Center" and the "Satellite Venture Business Laboratory", both
of which are run by the Muroran Institute of Technology, receive much attention.
Other industries in the city involve the production of quail eggs with the
largest output in Hokkaido and dairy products. In Oinaoshi Fishing Port, the
"Oinaoshi M-land Project" is under way, with the aim of creating
a port where sea farming and lots of friendly exchanges take place.
